Awesome Autumn

Autumn leaves … lying thickly all around, creating wonderful multi-coloured carpets. Bright shades of yellows and browns, with magenta and purple highlights thrown into the mix.

It is great fun, at any age, to walk through the patterned drifts – just like being the first person to walk across newly fallen snow. But with leaves, as you pass, you leave no lasting footprints. A few minutes later the gusty breeze has rearranged the leaves once more – it is almost as if no one has been there at all!

Despite the thick carpet of leaves underfoot, there are still plenty of leaves on the trees, where the same bright colours take on a translucent colourful glow in the autumn sunshine.

Below the trees, in many gardens, shrubs and hedges provide deeper shades of reds and purples, especially the climbers, which can temporarily transform houses into blocks of primary colours – maybe this is where Christo found his inspiration for wrapping buildings!

Autumn leaves offer a fantastic additional ingredient to the garden colour mix. Some years the colours are truly vibrant whereas in other years they may be more subdued. But they can always be relied on to give something extra, year-on-year. The bigger the shrub or tree, the greater the potential splash of colour!
